While men’s fashion circles are often dominated by sharp tailoring, stuffy suiting, skinny jeans and hipster accessories, the rules for the off-duty gentleman have experienced a bit of a shakeup. What’s emerged is a more insouciant look, that takes dressing down to a whole new level. Enter: the contemporary bohemian. This style draws inspiration from the hippies of the seventies and the new romantics of the eighties – think neutral colours, linen and cotton materials and sandals worthy of Jesus’ disciples. Jared Leto will be your style inspo here.
The issue the modern man is faced with, is how can you dress to the trending, laid back bohemian without looking like you’ve wandered off of a budget flight from south east asia? First of all, lose the shell necklace, baggy printed pants and unwashed hair – and the scent that comes with it. You don’t want to risk being confused with a nomad looking for the nearest backpackers hostel. These three must haves will form the base of your men’s hippie style.
Ditch your indigo jeans and black skinnies, and opt for something several shades lighter. Light wash jeans with an optional ripped knee are a great starting point. Be wary of bleach wash, though. Trust us, there’s a reason they haven’t been seen since boy bands ruled the nineties.
Opt for cool, relaxed-fit layers in airy fabrics. Linen tunics, unironed shirts and collarless tops are all in. Stick to cool earthy tones, but don’t focus too hard on coordination. The trick is to look like you don’t care.
Oh yes, you’ll need to trim your toenails for this. Archive your sneakers, brogues and business shoes, and go for an open sandal – a mid tan or brown will draw your bohemian nonchalance together. Oh, and don’t be conscious of your seemingly unattractive feet. The more rugged, hairy and subtly reminiscent of the stone age they are, the better. A bare foot encapsulates the carefree attitude that carries the contemporary hippie style in the everyday man.
As well as great barista art, as a bohemian you appreciate real visual art. Try playing with pieces that play homage to inscriptions, watercolours and cultural paintings. Scarves are an easy, set-and-forget drape-over that can ease prints into your style, or try a casual shirt in a YSL inspired paisley. Remember to keep the fit loose and relaxed, in an almost creasable fabric where possible.
Worried your inner awkward hipster will break through your chances of nailing the bohemian style? Don’t sweat it. If you’re not comfortable at first, start small and work up to more statement pieces, like prints and necklaces. We get it. Hippie bohemian style can be tough to incorporate into your wardrobe. It likely goes against a lot of menswear fashion rules you’ve ever lived by, and it isn’t really every boss’ dream. Reserve this look for European holidays, and off-duty weekends.
