Conquering the Smart Casual Conundrum in Four Steps

Get started

Picture this. You’ve just peeled open an invite to a ritzy party; the venue is awesome and the company looks like it should be, too. This night is shaping up to be a memorable one – until you see the dress code. The ever ambiguous, ‘smart casual’ strikes again and with it, the age-old question that has plagued the thoughts of man since at least 1985…

"Should I be more smart… or more casual?"

The point of being smart casual is to look polished without putting in too much thought or effort. It’s not as difficult as it sounds, we promise. In fact, this dress code gives you room to relax and incorporate your own flair while remaining comfortable and confident. If you panic every time you see the words ‘smart’ and ‘casual’ too close to one another, we’ve got you covered with these 4 tips.

1. Get the basics

‘The smart casual essentials for every man’s wardrobe.’ Thought they’d be hard to find? That’s why you’ve got us. Here they are in no particular order:

2. Judge the occasion

Depending on where you need to be, your ratio of smart to casual is going to fluctuate. An outfit for a rooftop work party, for example, will vastly differ to one you might wear on a night out. Think about the crowd, what you’ll be doing and how professional you aim to come across.

3. Dress up or down according to item of clothing

Thinking of wearing a blazer? Don’t overdo it with matching slacks and a white shirt, or you risk looking like a best man at your mate’s wedding. Instead, dress down with a pair of chinos, a trendy button-down and some brown, suede boots.

Likewise, if you’re donning those cool new sneakers, you still want to be taken seriously. Dress them up with a great watch and a smart jumper. For added cool, layer over a collared shirt.

4. Add your own touch

Don’t be afraid to roll up your sleeves or cuff your jeans. Remember, the point of smart casual is to be comfortable and stylish – nothing says that better than individuality, and feeling confident in your look.

It can feel like you’re walking a tightrope when it comes to dressing smart casual but with the right items and a splash of your own flair, you’ll have your look down pat. Let us take the guesswork out of dressing for any occasion with our bespoke capsule wardrobes, customised to your taste and style. You’ll never stress over a dress code again.

Here's what our happy customers are saying.

I'll never have to enter a shopping centre again!! Received my first kit. Felt like a kid again, getting Christmas present... Hands down one of the best outfits I've ever worn! It was like everything was hand picked, styled for a perfect fit. I was so impressed, especially with all the compliments received!! I'm changing my whole wardrobe. Thanks Mimi!!!

Could not be happier with Kent and Lime. After having a good chat with Denice (my stylist) got a kit the next day. Everything fit really well and she absolutely nailed the style I was after! Had another chat regarding aspects I liked and aspects I didn't like and now can't wait for the next kit. As someone who hates shopping for clothes I will never step foot in another clothing store again!

I gave K&L a crack because I don't enjoy clothes shopping and I get bored if I can't find what I want right away. My first stylist chat was good, the first couple of kits were hit and miss but the kit I just received (from a new stylist, Denice) is bang on. I'm not sending anything back, she absolutely nailed it, leaving me no reason to go clothes shopping.
